Michael Thedford Johnson

Born December 23, 1969, in Providence, R.I., He was the son of the late Thedford Garrett Jr and Ada  Garrett.

Michael was affectionately known as Mike, MJ or “The UPS Guy”. He graduated from Hope High School in Providence. He landed at UPS at a young age where he made his career of 29 years.  Michael had an infectious smile which he greeted everyone with.  Laughs were always guaranteed when in his presence. No matter where you saw him, he would give you a wave and yell “hey” from “his” work truck. Michael was an avid sports fan. He had a love for playing basketball and his favorite Dallas Cowboys. Can’t forget his love of music which he was notorious for blasting on his big speakers in his cars or belting out songs. When not working, he was spending time with family and mastering his craft of cooking in the kitchen or out on the grill.

In addition to being survived by his wife of 14 years, he leaves to mourn one daughter, Jessica Johnson of Warwick, RI. Three sons, Michael (Mikey) Johnson Jr., Eric Johnson both of Warwick, RI and Jalen Johnson of Johnston, RI. Two grandsons, Lucianni and Zayden Johnson of Warwick. He also leaves behind mother, Ada Garrett of Cranston, RI. Step-dad, Jerry Davis of Cranston. Two brothers, Mark Johnson of Providence, RI and Anthony (Jackie)Johnson of San Antonio, TX. Two sisters, Jemere Garrett of Cranston, RI and Jennifer (Rodolphe) Garrett- Thervil of Providence, RI. Mother –in-law, Roberta Cantrell of Johnston. Father-in Law, Joseph Fiyod of Smithfield, RI and Brother-in-law, Joe Cantrell of New Jersey.  Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who became family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thedford Garrett Jr.

Michael was truly the life of every conversation or event and will be forever loved and missed.

Viewing will be Monday September 27, 2021 from 9am-11am. Service to follow at 11am. Both will be at

Ebenezer Baptist Church, 475 Cranston Street,Providence, RI 02907. Burial will be in North Burial Ground, Providence at 1:30pm.
