

Richard Robert Tomlins, a beloved son, husband, father and community pillar passed away on October 15, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of service, love and dedication to community. Born on September 3, 1931, in Poughkeepsie, New York, he was the cherished son of Kenneth Tomlins and Frieda Just.
Richard’s journey through life was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and service. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1949, an accomplishment that set the stage for a lifetime of learning and achievement. Following high school, he worked at Etlinger Brothers and M. Swartz Clothiers and it was during this time that his remarkable sense of style and clothing expertise began to flourish. Richard was known throughout his life as a fashionable and creative dresser.
During the Korean War, Richard answered the call to serve his country. From May 15, 1952, until his honorable discharge on May 14, 1954, he exemplified his dedication by achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. He attended the Army Finance School at Fort Benjamin in Indiana, where he honed his financial and business skills.
Upon his discharge from the Army, Richard continued his education by attending Boston University, thanks to the GI Bill. There, he studied Business Administration, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
On January 28, 1956, Richard married the love of his life, Marie G. (Coppinger) Tomlins, at St. Teresa’s Church in Revere, Massachusetts. Their love and partnership were a testament to the enduring power of commitment and shared dreams and they were married 57 years until her passing in October, 2013.
Throughout his professional career, Richard held various leadership roles that allowed his keen intellect and engaging personality to shine. He worked at Pratt Whitney in Connecticut and later served as Vice President of Purchasing for Sheraton Hotels and Days Inn. His contributions extended to the academic world where he managed operations for Boston University and Barnard College. He also served in the role as Director of Purchasing and Sales at Howard Johnson’s.
In 2010, Richard ran for Mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island his beloved adopted home-town in his later years. Though he was ultimately defeated his decision to run reflected his commitment to local leadership and community service. He was also the founding President of Friends of Southeastern Residential Services (Friends of SRS) further showcasing his dedication to community. Richard founded the organization in memory of his special needs daughter, Leah Marie Tomlins, who passed away in April of 2012.
Richard was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Marie, his daughter Leah, his sister Shirley McGrath and her husband Edward, his brother Ken Tomlins and his wife Bertha, his brother Ronald Tomlins and his brother-in-law Douglas Kyzer.
Richard is survived by his children Marisa Tomlins, Stacey DiLorenzo, Richard Tomlins, II and his wife Joan. He leaves behind a loving granddaughter, Emma Tomlins as well as his sister Gail Kyzer, sister in law Barbara Tomlins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Richard Tomlins was a staunch supporter of the Cranston Police and firefighters and was known as the “Cake Man” for his habit of dropping off cakes for the police and firefighters every holiday season. He generously volunteered his time and resources to support local youth groups, notably Junior Achievement. His legacy is woven into the fabric of his community and his memory will continue to inspire and guide all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
In honoring the life of Richard R. Tomlins, we remember a man of exceptional character, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and community. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff at the Providence VA Medical Center and Beacon Hospice for exceptional care, kindness and support and a special thank you to his Certified Nursing Assistant Lisa, who has cared for him like a loving family member for 7 years.
His visitation will be held Thursday, October 20, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 PM and funeral will be held Friday at 9:00 AM in the PONTARELLI-MARINO FUNERAL HOME, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence followed by a service in the funeral home at 9:30 AM. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the R.I. Veteran Cemetery, Exeter.
