Anthony James Ustohal was born February 28, 1945, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Leonard and Marjorie (Miller) Ustohal, residing in nearby Hemingford. Tony attended Country School, graduated from Hemingford High School in 1963, then went to college at CSU Fort Collins to finish his education in 1967. He then gravitated into Denver to start his 42-year career in the insurance industry.
On September 21, 1991, Tony married Mary (Carlson) Shaw in Littleton, Colorado. In 1994 they moved to Nebraska to help Tony's father with the farm. Tony cherished those years spent with his father. The time he treasured the most were the afternoons when the work was done to sit on the back porch swing with his father listening to stories he had never heard before. After Tony's father passed at the age of 96, they returned to Colorado in 2009. They had their dream home built in Pueblo, which they loved every minute there together. Thank you, Dan Carlson—it would have never happened without you. We are eternally grateful.
Tony loved sports and was prolific in everyone—basketball, baseball, golf, pool, fishing, and hunting. Tony was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan since 1957; it’s a good thing that Mary also loved baseball. Tony was also active in the community, where he coached boys’ basketball and baseball. He was the announcer for Arvada West High School boys’ basketball for a short time when his college roommate's sons were playing. Tony was also an active member of Sertoma in Littleton and an active member of Kiwanis in Alliance.
Tony’s health issues began in 2012 where he had a bout with cancer, three shoulder surgeries, and lastly, a lung disease. Tony's spirit and faith never wavered; he continued to fight through all the challenges and rely on his faith that the Lord would guide him through.
Tony passed on July 31, 2025, in his home. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Mike Betka. He is survived by his wife Mary of 33 years, the most beautiful and loving years of her life; step-daughter Christine Roth, grandson Zach of Colorado Springs, step-son John and wife Tammy Shaw of Parker, Colorado, sister Lynn Betka of Scottsdale, Arizona, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was loved and cherished by so many; he will continue to live in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Pueblo Union Depot, Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 12pm.
