Beverly McCarthy of Pueblo passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 14, 2012, with her family’s love everywhere around her. Beverly Jane Tooley was born on Sept. 7, 1916, in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Earl C. and Grace K. Tooley and older sister of Charmion. While attending the Indiana School of Nursing in Indianapolis she met George F. McCarthy Jr. of Pueblo, a student at Butler University. They married in 1939 and settled in Pueblo, where George Jr. worked with his father George F. Sr. at the George McCarthy Funeral Home. Along with their son Michael they briefly relocated to Kokomo at the end of World War II, then returned again to Pueblo to stay. A second son, Jeffrey was born in Kokomo. When George McCarthy Sr. moved to Denver in 1949, George Jr. assumed ownership of the family funeral home. Two more sons, Kevin and Peter, were born during that time. Her husband, George McCarthy died on August 31, 1997.
Beverly tended to her family for most of her adult life. She supported and protected her husband and sons in everything they ever did. A quiet and unassuming person, like other women of her generation she often wondered aloud what she had "accomplished" in life, never understanding the powerful effect of her love on everybody it touched. In her own modest way she truly was the heart of her family. She was a beautiful, strong, and selfless woman and her family will miss her more than any of their words could ever say.
She is survived by her four sons, Michael McCarthy of Atlanta, Jeffrey McCarthy of Denver, Kevin (Susan) McCarthy and Peter (Kelly) McCarthy of Pueblo; six grandchildren, Beth (Stephen) Wyner of Atlanta, Brooke (Aaron) Mize of Charlotte, North Carolina, Elly (Nolan) Harris of San Clemente, California, Ashley (Bret) Barker of Manhattan Beach, California, Colin McCarthy of Pueblo and Benjamin McCarthy of Durango, Colorado; two step-grandchildren, Jeff and Scott (Tammy) Moore of Pueblo; five great-grandchildren, Grace and Charlie Wyner, Jack and Cole Harris and Scout Ava Barker and two step-great grandchildren, Bane and Mattie Moore. Beverly is also survived by her sister Charmion (Barne) Quick of Los Angeles.
A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012. Donations in Beverly’s name may be made to the Pueblo Community Soup Kitchen.
