Jim Archuleta was born on December 27, 1946, in Alamosa, Colorado. He was the only child of Saul and Genevieve Archuleta. From a young age, he was shaped by a deep sense of discipline, personal responsibility, and a drive to get things done.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School and earned his degree from Southern Colorado State College. Early in his career, Jim worked as a Spanish teacher and coached baseball and basketball in Walsenburg Catholic High School and later at Roncalli Catholic High School in Pueblo. He valued structure and accountability—traits he brought into both the classroom and the athletic field.
On September 20, 1969, Jim married Laura Jean Ortega. Their marriage of 55 years was a testament to commitment and endurance. Together they raised two sons, James (Wendy) and Jeff Archuleta.
Jim spent more than three decades with The Pueblo Chieftain in a variety of managerial roles. From route logistics to upper-level operations, he played a key part in the daily rhythm of the paper’s production and delivery. Colleagues knew him as someone who took his responsibilities seriously and approached his work with consistency and determination.
He later owned and operated Archie’s Automotive from 2013 to 2015, carrying that same focus into small business ownership.
A proud grandfather (Danika, Kade, Rayven, Cassie, Ava, Emma and Genny) and great-grandfather (Donte and Julian), Jim found meaning in family—especially during Sunday dinners, where he enjoyed seeing everyone gathered together. Mexican cuisine became a family favorite under his watchful eye, and he took pride in making sure those meals were part of the rhythm that kept everyone connected.
Holidays brought special joy, particularly through his love of sharing family recipes passed down through generations. From biscochitos to pizzelle cookies, he made sure these traditions were carried on—and always made time for a generous taste test. His sweet tooth was no secret. If there was sugar involved, he was all in.
Jim also gave time to local organizations, including the Eagles Aerie #145, where he served as Secretary, and serving as secretary for the Pueblo Bowling Association for many years. Bowling was a passion for many years, and in 2010, he was honored with induction into the Colorado Bowling Hall of Fame. He was known for his distinct laugh, competitive nature in Golf and Cornhole and story telling and jokes.
Jim was a firm and consistent presence in many lives. He lived according to his principles, and those who knew him knew exactly where he stood. In remembering him, we acknowledge a life defined by effort, resolve, and the steady rhythms of work, tradition, and family.
