Senfarosa Armijo Valdez, affectionately known as “Rose,” passed away on October 2, 2016 in Pueblo, Colorado. She was born on November 26, 1917 in Walsenburg, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband Ben G Valdez; 2 daughters, Gloria and Consuelo and 4 sons; Henry, John, Jim, Arthur, and 1 daughter in law Sylvia Valdez; 4 grandsons, 3 sons in law; one sister, Stella McGaha, and 3 brothers, John, Ben, and Felix. She leaves to cherish her memories are her sons and daughter in law; Dave (Priscilla), Joseph (Isabelle), Daniel (Sharon) Valdez and daughters Erma Phillips, Lucille Martinez, Patricia (Joe Raymond) Ayala, Nancy Mestas, JoAnna (Chris) Vigil and daughters in law Cecilia, Rosemary, and MaryAnn Valdez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Our mother was a very talented person, because everything she accomplished was self-taught. Before she took up painting, she was a very good seamstress. She used to make our clothes for school. Then she would make bonnets and quilts, and do some mending for people that she knew. She also made my grandmother some flannel nightgowns so that she wouldn’t be cold. Our mother also taught herself how to play the piano. We knew it was time to get up for school when she would play the piano. I guess that was better than getting water thrown on our faces. Now back to the paintings. She joined the art guild and flourished from there where she had won numerous awards and where she got a chance to show off her work. One of her greatest accomplishments was when she was a candidate for the silver queen for the fair one year because they had displayed her art work. Although she didn’t win, she will always be in our minds and in our hearts “the Silver Queen.” Through all the years, our mother was a very good teacher and provider because she had instilled in us to get an education so that we could better ourselves, learn from our mistakes, to be caring toward others. She was always there for us, no matter what. Also making sure we were takin care of and being fed. Last but not least the best cook ever. Especially making mounds of fat tortillas and biscuits you could tear open and make sandwiches with them. After all, having 14 kids to feed was to her probably feeding an army. We will always remember the gathering we had during the fiesta day when everyone would pitch in and enjoy the food and company and the parades. She would be looking forward to that day. She was so proud because she had a daughter in law that was the 1st queen and a granddaughter who was fiesta queen too. There have been many historical events in my mother’s life – too many to mention and it keeps us in awe. She also made sure we learned about God, Jesus, and the bible. For us to keep the faith like she did. Have faith and love in God.
