It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Angela Marie West (née Miraglia), 84, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of October 5, 2023. Angela was a beacon of love and kindness, touching the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Born May 8 1939 in Flushing, Queens, New York, to Joseph and Mary (née Schreiber) Mirgalia. As the baby of the family, Angela was adored by her two older brothers, Alexander and Joseph who both preceded her in death. She graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1957. That same year, she met and married the love of her life, Jack Joshua West.
In the early years of their marriage, Angela and Jack welcomed three children, David, Donna, and Linda. As an Air Force family, they moved often. When Jack was deployed on two separate tours of Vietnam, Angela remained a pillar of comfort and strength to her children. An active mother, she was always planning outings and activities for her children, often inviting her nieces and nephews to join in on the fun.
One of the great joys of Angela’s life was becoming a grandmother. She cherished her two granddaughters Lauren and Angela, playing a big role in both of their childhoods, often acting as their second parent. She was a source of unconditional love and support. For 40 years, she wore the words “Sweetest Grandma” around her neck. It was a superlative she earned every day. In her later years, Angela welcomed a great grandson, Odin, who brought her so much joy and happiness. No stranger to loss, her oldest child, David, passed in 1981 and she lost her husband, Jack, in 1991. Though heartbroken by their passing, Angela never became bitter. She lived her life always looking on the bright side of things, choosing love and hope over anger and despair.
Angela enjoyed travel and was fortunate enough to take many wonderful trips. She loved “making memories” with her family and was always a loving mother to her “fur babies”. Outgoing and friendly, she collected friends wherever she went. She cherished them all and when she could not see them in person, she was on the phone with them.
In her passing, Angela leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those fortunate enough to know her. She will forever remain in our hearts, a testament to the enduring power of love and selflessness. Angela loved the quote “it is not the years in your life, it is the life in your years” and she succeeded in packing a lot of life into the 84 years she lived.
Angela is survived by her daughters Donna and Linda, her two granddaughters Lauren and Angela, her great grandson Odin, her sister-in-law Barbara, a host of nieces and nephews who called her “Auntie Angel”, and countless friends.
As we bid farewell to an extraordinary woman, let us remember the lessons she imparted and the love she shared. May her memory be a guiding light for all of us as we strive to live with the same grace, kindness, and generosity that she exemplified throughout her life.
