Luz Cartagena Vargas, “Lucy”, 95, died December 11, 2010 in Tacoma, WA. She was born February 16, 1915 in Metcalf, Arizona, the youngest of 12 children of Celso C. Cartagena and Cruz Garcia. She graduated from Miami High School in Miami, Arizona in 1935 and El Paso Vocational School in El Paso, Texas in 1936. Lucy married Juan Jose “Joe” Vargas on June 25, 1937 in Miami, Arizona and he preceded her in death Dec. 29, 1993. She worked for the L’Anse Creuse School District in Clinton Township, Michigan as the Head Cook for several elementary schools from 1956, retiring in 1976. In 1987 she moved from Michigan to Safford, Arizona and in 1993, after the death of her husband, she moved to Puyallup, Washington to be near her daughter. Lucy is survived by her Daughter, Naomi Vargas-Peck of Tacoma, Son, Pierre R. Vargas of Clinton Township, Michigan. She was also preceded in death by a son, Orlando Alonzo Vargas in 1989. Also surviving her are 8 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. Arrangements are by Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup, Washington.
