Mavis Avonne Hopland Passed away on June 11, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Goldie Ross, and was born in Calgary, Alberta on Jan. 4, 1925. She moved to Shelton, Washington with her family in 1935, and in 1943 she graduated from Irene S. Reed High School and became a US citizen. She met her husband Gordon in 1947, and they were married June 20, 1948. After residing in many parts of the country over the next 18 years, they settled in Puyallup, where Mavis volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital and the Wildwood Elementary School library. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and a Rainbow Girl Advisor for many years. She made many friends while working as a salesclerk for Tubbin Jewelry. She was recently recognized by the City of Puyallup for her 17 dedicated years of volunteering at the Puyallup Public Library. April 16, 2010 was declared "Mavis Hopland Day" at the library by the mayor of Puyallup. Mavis was quick-witted, patriotic, and always looked for the good in people. She felt fortunate to have her family nearby, and took every opportunity to be with them. She was proud to be able to introduce her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to all she met! She is survived by her daughters, Mary Templeman-Smith (Doug) and Jeannette Wolfe (Doug), her grandchildren, Leah Holden (Mike), Lauren, Madeline, and Katherine Smith, Sarah Keller (Joe), Cassie Wolfe, and Kevin Wolfe (Bridget), and her great-grandchildren, Abigail and Benjamin Keller. We will celebrate her life with a service at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Puyallup Public Library immediately following the service. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Hospital's ICU for their tremendous support during Mavis' illness. Please feel free to honor Mavis' memory by contributing to the Puyallup Public Library or the American Diabetes Association .
