Nobody else held me so tight
Or made me feel so right
No one's eyes shined so bright with love
As my mom, who is now high above.
- Tamsen Butler
The world has lost a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Elizabeth Carolan, on January 12, 2021. Polly, as she was lovingly known, never stopped giving out the best hugs or displaying her infectious smile. Polly passed away in her home surrounded by her family with her husband Peter holding her hand. Elizabeth was born in Kilchreest, County Galway, Ireland. She found her passion with nursing and stayed with that profession her entire career, never tiring of providing compassion and care to all she met.
Her adventurous spirit started young when she left her home at the age of 16 to go to nursing school in England. How proud she looked on graduation day with her freshly starched uniform displaying her nursing pin. She would go on to be a Midwife and an Operating Theater nurse; promoted as youngest ward Sister in her beloved St. Giles.
Her love for nursing was only surpassed by her love for family. Foremost her beloved Peter, husband of 52 years, 3 children and her 9 grandchildren. She shared her love of Irish music and songs, devotion to her faith, and famous Irish soda bread with all her friends and family. Her grandchildren filled her heart with joy.
Her adventurous spirit remained after her retirement when she travelled the country with her husband. She loved exploring her adopted home and her trips with Peter included destinations like Yellowstone Park, Old Faithful, Mt. Rushmore and even a trip down the Snake River, white water rafting.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Peter, children Patrick (Kathleen), Raymond (Cathy), and Mary (Peter), and her 9 grandchildren Ronan, Marin, Michael, Kate, Grace, Brendan, Conor, Declan and Conal as well as her cherished sisters Maura, Bernadette, and Patricia and her brothers and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents Margaret and Ned as well as her beloved brothers John and Mickey and brother-in-law Sean.
Friends are invited to visit with Elizabeth at Stutzman Funeral Home in Queens Village, NY on Friday January 15th, 2021 with funeral at St. Hedwig’s Church in Floral Park and burial in Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury.
