Elsa Miranda was born on July 22, 1944 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico to her mother Ines Melendez and father Edwardo Medina. She was raised in Vieques, Puerto Rico by her maternal grandparents, particularly her grandmother who she affectionately knew as “Mamá.” At approximately 17 years old she said farewell to the island of Vieques and found her way to the island of Manhattan and the borough of Brooklyn, to reunite with her sister.
There she met and married, her forever love, Mario Miranda on May 29, 1965. They shared 56 years of marriage. Their love was one of romance novels and truly unconditional. Elsa had 3 loving children, Mario Jr., Myra, and Mónica. They lived in Bushwick, Brooklyn, for some years and then made the move to Queens Village where they purchased their first, and current, home having resided in it for approximately 44 years.
Elsa is survived by her adoring, loving, and faithful husband, Mario, her three children, Mario Jr., Myra, and Mónica, and 5 grandchildren, Nicholas, Jonathan, Daniel, Miranda, and Peter. She leaves behind her beloved siblings, nephews, and nieces, in-laws, family and extended family, friends, and long-time neighbors. As a faithful servant of God, she also leaves a church family from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, especially the Spanish Mass choir.
For most of her working career Elsa was an employee of New York State. She retired from Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens where she served as an Executive Assistant. From humble beginnings working in the factories of NYC she strived to grow and served as a court stenographer and on the staff of the Division of Human Rights located in the former World Trade Center, Twin Towers. To add to her achievements, at the age of 50, she completed a B.A. from Queens College, City University of New York, with a concentration in Social Studies and Psychology.
A second Mom to many, she welcomed many a family member or friends, especially the friends of her children. Those who knew her remember her as someone they adored “with the biggest of smiles and lots of love, handy to give out”. Elsa was a loving, welcoming, smiling, cheerful, dynamic, strong, kind, beautiful, amazing, resilient woman who was always the life of the party as she danced the night away with family and friends. She was known for her great cooking, especially her Puerto Rican Arepas, Thanksgiving and Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) dinners, and her special homemade Coquito!
We will miss her dearly but know she is no longer in pain and is resting peacefully with Papa Dios in heaven and happy to be reunited with her Mama, her Madrina (Godmother), her Mother, and beloved family and friends who have welcomed her home.
