The journey from Lluidas Vale involved stops in Linstead, Bog Walk and Spanish Town, St Catherine . She settled in Spanish Town for a while. There she gave birth to her two oldest children Lancelot (d. 2004)and Cedric Nelson. She subsequently moved to Greenwich Farm, Kingston with her partner Clinton Nelson (aka Clinton Linton)and their two children prior to his migration to the USA. Over the years she traversed many other hamlets of Kingston, namely, Rose Town, New Town (birth of Angela Henry), Jones Town ,Trench Town ( birth of Clive Henry, d. 1989) and finally Hannah Town.
Life was harsh for her. She was a strong, independent single woman and mother. She worked at various times as dressmaker, nurse’s aide, kitchen help, market worker and bricklayer. Despite this hardship she managed to raise her four children to be responsible adults.
Ms Russell migrated to Brooklyn NY in 1972, her two oldest children had been living in the USA, 5 years and two years prior respectively. Her two youngest children joined her in 1973. Despite migrating to the USA at 51 years of age she returned to school, received her CNA , started to do her GED in order to obtain a LPN , however the financial obligations of life superseded. She also spoke of her childhood desire to become a Nurse.
She worked 7 days weekly, various schedules for many years in order to overcome the financial challenges life presented. She retired at 72 years of age from Kings Harbor Nursing Home where she started working full time at 60 years of age .
Like the Biblical figures Moses, Joseph and Job life improved for Eunice in her latter years. She was able to purchase her home in East Flatbush which was shared with multiple generations through the years. She traveled, visited several countries and continents that she had just imagined while reading as a child.
Her strength has been tested through the years as she continued saying goodbye to her family members, including two of her children. Her wit, guidance and advice have benefited her generations who will mourn her passing but will lovingly remember that , “grandma is older than sliced bread“.
She was firm and not very compromising, her yes or her nos were definite. If her “ spirit did not take to you”, argument closed. In her prime , she was the ride or die for her family. Her energy will be missed. She lived for her family.
She leaves behind to mourn her passing her two children Cedric Nelson, Dr Angela Henry Todd( aka Jackson) grandchildren, Yvette Nelson, Dale Nelson, Veronica Nelson, Ahkeem Nelson, Ian Jackson, Natsai Todd and Chelsea Todd, great grandchildren Jahquan Nelson, Najee Nelson, Dillin Simon, Jasmin Simon, Dior Jackson and Deon Jackson and great great grandchildren Kyel Nelson, Jeremiah Nelson and Kynslie Nelson. Her sons Lancelot Nelson and Clive Henry preceded her in death.
Her strength, dedication, nomadic energy and courage will forever remain with us.
