Jean Wei Tzu was born on March 29,1960 in Taipei, Taiwan to parents Tzu Yi-Gan and Chin Tieh-Fei. The seventh of eight children, Jean grew up in the church life in Hall 11 in Taipei. She loved the Lord as a child and the songs she learned would later become a great source of comfort to her in her illness.* At twelve years old, she and her family immigrated to Elmhurst, New York. Jean went on to attend Columbia University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Through mutual family connections, she began courting Timothy Hung and they were married in Dunton House in January 1981. One year later, they welcomed their first daughter, Rachel, and over the next seventeen years, their family continued to grow with daughters Abigail, Esther, Julia-Zoe, and Christyn.
As a mother, Jean was fun, loving and energetic. She always seemed to be on the go, spending countless hours driving the children to activities, attending meetings, conferences and trainings, and taking the family on vacations. This continued with her grandchildren where she would often drive hours (especially after a quick nap) to spend some time with them and then return home the same day. She never hesitated to avail herself for her family; this care carried over to new ones and friends who quickly became included in her “family.” She would go out of her way to help someone in need, from taking new students grocery shopping to inviting acquaintances to join family vacations.
Throughout their time in the church life in New York City, Timothy and Jean continually opened their home to the saints, hosting many love feasts, small group meetings, and informal gatherings. Many fondly remember spending a week of Summer School of Truth crowded in at the Hung's home with twenty other young people. Jean was faithful in feeding the saints, maintaining an English and Chinese prayer group for decades, and shepherding younger sisters and gospel contacts.
In addition to her family life and church life, Jean had a 25 year career as an engineer at a large telecom corporation. At the age of fifty, she went back to school to change careers. At the time, Timothy was serving the Lord full time and her three youngest daughters were still in school, but the Lord supplied the grace. Jean began to work as a nursing assistant while earning her nursing degree and supporting her family. After her graduation, she worked as an inpatient nurse and then as a home visiting nurse.
Her zest for life and her sense of humor endeared her to all. Some may not know that though she cooked a lot for the saints, she loved eating out and had a sweet tooth. One of her favorite dishes was tangyuan (sweet rice ball soup). She also had a love for travel and especially blending with saints. She traveled around the US, and abroad to Ethiopia, India, Germany, Hungary, Taiwan, Israel and Lebanon.
In February 2021, Jean was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Even in her illness, she remained active in the children’s service, prayed with various sisters, and shepherded new ones. She and Timothy were truly partners in pursuing and serving the Lord. Together, they maintained reading the Bible, praying, and singing hymns. Jean and her family were very much shepherded by the outpouring of love from the saints throughout this process including all of the house visits, meal preparations, and especially the prayer in the Body. On August 19, 2022, Jean went to be with the Lord with Timothy by her side.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, five daughters, three sons-in-law (Jared Robbins, Jeremy Suh, and Joseph Zhou), six grandchildren (Samuel, Jordan, Spencer, Shiloh, Cecilia and Gilead), nieces and nephews, and many spiritual children. Although we deeply miss her, we are grateful for our time with her and thankful that she is now with her Lord. Jean will be remembered as a dear wife, mother, sister, and friend. We thank the Lord for His abounding grace and the rich supply from the Body during this time.
*Hymns Jean would sing
*With Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm,
Smile at the storm, smile at the storm;
With Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm,
As we go sailing on.
*Sparrow big, sparrow small, Living in the trees so tall;
Flying up, flying down, God takes care of you!
I am far more valuable; God takes care of me as well.
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! He takes care of me.
