Kamala Suntharalingam

Kamala Devi Suntharalingam, (neé Supramaniam): Beloved wife of Kanaga, and sister to Saradha, Gnana Isvaran, Ganesan, and the late Supramaniam Srinivasan and Padma Somasundaram. Loving mother to Parvadha, Nishkala, and Vyshnavi Suntharalingam, and adored grandmother to Rachel, Divya, and Kiran Diamond, and Kierthan and Annika Lathrop passed away peacefully on 3 February.

Kamala was born in Colombo, Ceylon and grew up in various parts of that country surrounded by a loving extended family and a strong network of friends. Following her graduation from Madras Christian College in 1954, she taught at Good Shepherd Convent in Kotenha Colombo for twenty-five years. In 1972, with her husband and three children she emigrated to New York, USA. She worked at Downstate Medical Center State University of New York as Research Scientist for thirty-five years.

Kamala was a vibrant personality, a strong believer in the work ethic, who took a tremendous interest in all people. She took great delight in the accomplishments of her extended family, friends, and was well known for her encouragement and the support she provided to everyone, including frequently “strangers” who soon became firm friends of the family. An avid gardner throughout her life, Kamala took a keen interest in her roses, orchids, hydrangeas, cacti, jasmine and watching and supporting all things that grow.

Kamala always will be loved and remembered for her tremendous spirit, positive outlook on life, the network of connections she made, nurtured and shared. She will be sorely missed by her family, her cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues.
