Marie Y. Jean Louis was born on March 15, 1958 to Ylota Ternisca and Oxilien Jean Louis in Petion-Ville, Haiti. She was the oldest of seven children: sister Marie Chantal Jean Louis, brothers Lesly Jean Louis and Sergo Jean Louis, and sisters Marie Denise Jean Louis, Marie Ange JN Louis and Raymonde Jean Louis.
After graduating from the high school, Lycée Alexandre-Pétion, she attended Institut Haitiano Americain, a language school. She would then go on to study haute couture at Maison Menagere Anne-Marie Desvarieux and ran her own business of custom-made dresses and clothing.
In 1989, she left Haiti for New York. In 1990, she welcomed her first and only child, Jardley Jean-Louis. She would work as a home attendant caring for elderly and disabled people in their homes until 2002 where she begin work as a Certified Nurses’ Aide at Coler (formally Coler-Goldwater Hospital). She would work at Coler Hospital until her retirement in 2022.
Beyond the many roles and names she had in life, Marie Y. Jean Louis was a complex force of a person. A woman of strong faith, she had a deep and fortified relationship with God that carried her through many eras of her life. She is remembered for her deep passion for fashion design - constantly drawing sketches of clothing on blank white surfaces within reach, her thirst for learning, incredible sense of humor and love of jokes, timely facial expressions, long warm chats, love of all things French, sound advice, and her strength and optimistic perseverance.
She is survived by her child, Jardley and Jardley’s cat, Jasper, her sisters Marie Denise and Marie Ange and brother Sergo, her nieces and nephews and godchildren, and her countless cousins and friends.
