It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ursulina "Sulie" Punch, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who died on January 29. 2025, at the age of 87. Sulie was born on October 9, 1937, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the eldest of five children to Alfonso Tirado and Gregoria Abraham.
Growing up in Ponce, Sulie’s strong work ethic and passion for learning led her to the
Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, where she graduated in 1957. Soon after, she moved to New York City, where she lived with her aunt Adolfina and continued her education at NYU's School of Social Work. She earned her master's degree in social work in 1967, a milestone that reflected her lifelong dedication to helping others.
In 1968, Sulie met Richard Punch, and the two quickly fell in love. They were both clinical social workers determined to make a difference in society. So, on July 20, 1968, they joined forces, married and raised their two children, Amanda and Malcolm. Sulie continued her work as a Certified Social Worker (CSW) while balancing the demands of motherhood and family. Her commitment to both her career and her family was unwavering.
Despite changes to their relationship in 1991, they remained bonded for the sake of their children. Together, they co-parented and supported Amanda and Malcolm through their respective journeys in life. Birthdays and holidays were all celebrated together. Amanda married Robert Etienne in 1994, and Sulie was overjoyed to become a grandmother to two cherished grandsons, Tristan and Tyler.
Sulie’s legacy is defined by her dedication to her family, her professional achievements, and her compassion for others. Throughout her life, she touched many lives, offering support, guidance, and love to everyone around her.
Sulie was predeceased by her brother, Alfonso Jr. (Cachito), and is survived by her siblings Basilia (Tatie), Marta, and Jose (Chely). She is also remembered by her children Amanda and Malcolm, her grandsons Tristan and Tyler, her son-in-law, Robert Etienne, her niece Dr. Daphne Kendricks, her nephews, cousins and her friends and loved ones who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
A celebration of her life will be held in the coming days. The family extends their deepest thanks for the love and support they have received during this difficult time. In honor of Sulie’s life, her family requests that donations be made to organizations dedicated to social services and family care, causes that were close to her heart.
May she rest in peace.
