

Donald McCarthy Sr. of Quincy, formerly of Jamaica Plain unexpectedly passed away on Monday June 29, 2015 at the age of 66. Donald was the loved son of the late William and Eleanor (Perkins) McCarthy. Donald graduated from North Quincy High School in 1967 and was a drummer in the drum and bugle corps. He then attended the New England Institute of Anatomy in 1972 to which he then became a licensed Funeral Director. Donald began his, over forty year career as a Funeral Director for area funeral homes before ultimately joining the Deware Funeral Home family where he worked for over 25 years.
Throughout Donald’s life, he was an active member in the communities to which he served. He was involved in many organizations and often served in a leadership role for many of them such as the Quincy South Shore Cultural Commission, Quincy Kiwanis, Quincy Elks, North Quincy Knights of Columbus, Harvey’s Salt Water Fishing Club, Quincy Sons of Italy, Most Blessed Sacrament Church to which he served as a Eucharistic minister, Quincy Yacht Club, Quincy Bay Race Week, Commodores Club of America, Parent Teacher Associations, Notary of the Public, Town River Yacht Club and the Christmas Parade Committee as well as the City of Quincy’s First Night celebrations.
Donald also shared his love of the outdoors with many of his friends and family members. As an avid boater, he would frequent yacht clubs in and around Quincy Bay on the most recent pride and joy “Quick Decision”. Proud to fly his burgees on the stem Donald was a past commodore of the Quincy Yacht Club as well as a past President of the Commodores Club. He would frequent surrounding yacht clubs for various functions always sharply dressed in his uniform.
Donald is survived by his fiancée Eileen Reid of Quincy, his children Donald S. McCarthy II of Nashua, NH., Scott McCarthy of Canton, MA., Angela McCarthy of Bridgewater, MA., William J. Reid of Quincy, MA., and Lisa M. Reid of Quincy, MA. Donald was a loving grandfather to Ethan, Colin, Bryan, and Lachlyn. Also, one of five sons he is leaving behind Kenneth F. McCarthy of AZ, William P. McCarthy of Norwood, and Paul G. McCarthy of FL., and the late Robert E. McCarthy of Weymouth. He also leaves cousins, nieces, nephews and many loved and cherished friends. He and Eileen brought together family and friends creating a new family legacy the McReid Family.
The family will receive visitors in the Deware Funeral Home, 576 Hancock St., Quincy on Monday from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1015 Sea St., Quincy on Tuesday at 10am. Services will conclude with interment in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
