Michael Patten Atwood, 74, passed peacefully from this life and into the arms of his Savior, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, deep love, and joyful humor. Michael was born on August 19, 1951, to Jerry Atwood and Jean (Atwood) Henchal, and grew up surrounded by the strong family values that shaped the man he would become.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 21 years, Patricia Bryant Atwood; his mother, Jean Henchal; his children Angela (Jerrid) Jungling, Jeremy (Nicole) Atwood, Tabitha (Brett) Luth, Christy (Jason) Alphin, and Stephanie Gomez (Aaron Richardson); and his beloved grandchildren—Aaron, Alexis, Angel, Leilani, Jason Jr., Ethan, Emma, Grace, Sarah, and Kaydin—as well as eight great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Jerry) Dunham, and many nieces and nephews who cherished his playful spirit and steady presence.
Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents Julius and Arnette Moneypenny and Lester and Emma Atwood; his father Jerry Atwood; his stepfather Donald Henchal; his son Jay Atwood; and his sister Judy Reedy.
Michael proudly served in the United States Navy, where his dedication and determination earned him honors such as the Training Squadron Thirty-One Sailor of the Month. His can-do attitude and desire to excel were hallmarks not only of his military service but of the way he approached every chapter of his life.
A man of deep Christian faith, Michael lived with a Christ-like love that radiated to everyone he met. He openly shared God’s wisdom and grace, offering encouragement, compassion, and prayer whenever it was needed. His greatest joy was found in his family—especially in the moments spent laughing, teaching, adventuring, and simply being together. He delighted in the outdoors, whether kayaking on quiet waters, fly fishing, boating on the lake, wandering mountain trails, or bringing lighthearted fun to every gathering with his childlike, mischievous humor.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of devotion, strength, and faith. His family will carry forward his love for the Lord and the lessons he lived so faithfully: to love generously, laugh often, and walk through life with gratitude and grace.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 13th, 2025 at 11:00 am at Arran Lake Baptist Church 1130 Bingham Dr, Fayetteville, NC 28304 with Dr. Andrew Clark officiating. Military honors will follow.
