Alfred Ezra Page, Jr., 75, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2011 with his family by his side. Born on November 4, 1935 at White Pond, in Robeson County, NC, he was the son of the late Alfred E. Page, Sr. and Ada Horne Page.
He grew up on a depression-era tobacco farm, where he learned the importance of thrift and hard work. He carried these values with him all his life. After graduating from Fairmont High School and East Carolina University, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. During Basic Training in 1958, he was selected as Soldier of the Month. He trained to be a psychiatric social worker at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Afterward, he was assigned to Letterman Army General Hospital in San Francisco, California.
In 1961, after leaving the service, he moved to Raleigh and married college sweetheart, Doris Bulluck, whom he dubbed “Slim.” He began work as an industrial therapist at Dorothea Dix Hospital. He was promoted to personnel manager at Dix, and later moved to the Department of Human Resources for the state of North Carolina. He retired from the state after a total of 32 years of service, during which he helped many people find jobs and improve their lives.
In retirement, Al and Doris enjoyed travel, especially his getaways to his beloved fishing place in Aurora, NC, and trips to visit their grandson in the Chicago area. And though he was officially retired, he never stopped working—maintaining his rental properties in the area.
He loved his family dearly. He and Doris were looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this June with the family: son Russell Page and wife Janice, of Wake Forest; daughter Lisa Dombrowski and husband Larry, of West Dundee, IL; and grandson Benjamin Page Dombrowski.
Al was a member of Benson Memorial United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC and the 41 Club.
He is also survived by siblings: S.D. Page, of New Waverly, TX and Mary P. Sellers and husband Jimmy, of Lake City, SC; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends, including his friend of 50 years, Melvin Humphrey, of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: David C. Page; sister-in-law: Kay Page; and infant siblings: Billy, Twyla, and Benjamin.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in Raleigh at Benson Memorial United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. A catered reception will follow.
Flowers are appreciated; however, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association: 3131 RDU Center Drive, Suite 100, Morrisville, NC 27560; or to the church at 4706 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.
