He graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1951 and N.C. State University in 1955, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and ROTC.
In 1956, he married Nancy Green of Raleigh. He then served with U.S. Armed Services Quartermaster Core in St. Petersburg, VA. and Orleans, France, where his daughter, Nancy was born.
He began his career in Henderson at Harriet Henderson Cotton Mills in 1957. Returning to Raleigh in 1965, he worked for the state of North Carolina in the Office of State Personnel and the Department of Human Resources. Retiring from state government in 1993, he continued his service to North Carolina as a long term member of the N.C. State Employee Credit Union Loan Review Committee.
“Babu”, as dubbed by his beloved grandchildren, absolutely loved being around children of all ages and people in general. He lit up any room he entered with his positive spirit. Andrew found common ground with anyone and could engage in meaningful conversation. Playing golf, woodworking and rooting for the N.C. State Wolfpack were his passions and he was always on call as "Handy Andy" to family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nancy Green Hinton; his daughter, Nancy Andrews (Jack); his son, Andrew Goodwin Hinton III (Tammy); and his grandchildren, Simmons Andrews Trowbridge (Kody), Andrew Goodwin Hinton IV, and Malone Parrish Hinton.
A celebration of his life will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 27th at 4 p.m. The family will receive following the service.
