She was the daughter of the late James Norfleet Smith and Annie Battle Miller. Her mother died when she was quite young, and she was raised by her stepmother Marjorie ("Mudgie") Stenhouse Smith.
She was educated in the Goldsboro, North Carolina school system and moved to St Mary's College in Raleigh, NC. After two years of Junior College at St Mary's, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Social Work.
Ann met her future husband, Harold Gene Hall, while working in the juvenile court system in Winston-Salem, NC. The two fell in love, got married and moved to Raleigh where Harold began practicing law. They had two children, Mary Battle Hall Roethling and James Graham Hall. Ann and her husband Harold maintained many of the friendships they forged when they first moved to Raleigh in the early 1960's. In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, she thrived in Raleigh while working with many organizations, such at the Junior League of Raleigh, the Colonial Dames of America, Hilltop Home, and Meals on Wheels.
She was devoted to St Michael's Episcopal Church, where she was especially active in many ways, from volunteering her time answering the phone to being Altar Guild Chair. She and Harold were especially fond of the music program at St Michael's, and supported it in any way they could. After her children graduated, she spent many years serving on the Rex Hospital Guild Board, and donated many hours as a volunteer in the Korner Gift Shop and pushing the Canteen Cart through the halls of Rex Hospital.
Ann is survived by her husband of 63 years, Harold, as well as daughter Mary Battle Roethling and her husband Peter, and her son Jim and his wife, Stephanie. She was also blessed with six grandchildren; Katherine Roethling, Meredith Roethling and fiancé Stephen Wiles, Charlie Roethling, Emma Wimberley and husband Conner, Graham Hall and Alex Hall. Ann is also survived by her sister, Margie Clark, and brothers Henry Smith and Kempton Smith.
She is predeceased by her sister Jane Smith Morgan and brothers Robert Smith and James Norfleet Smith, Jr.
For the past year, Ann and Harold were cared for by wonderful caregivers from The Key Home Care. Several caregivers have become family, and Ann's children will be forever grateful for their compassion and support.
A celebration of life will be held on July 11, 2025, at 1:00 pm at St Michael's Episcopal Church in Raleigh. Ann's final resting place will be the columbarium at St Michael's.
