

Enthusiastic outdoorsman and avid sportsman, Art is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis A. Hoch, two sons, Arthur E. “Buddy” Hoch, Scott M. Hoch, four grandchildren, Heather Hoch Szajda, Cameron S. Hoch, Lindsey J. Hoch, Katherine M. Hoch, two great-grandchildren, Grant D. Szajda and Brooke I. Szajda, and two sisters, Dorothy Jean Hess and Ida Mary Smith.
He graduated Mercersburg High School in Mercersburg, PA in 1943 and joined the Army in February 1943 and played baseball for the Third Service Command, Fort Lee Travelers during WWII. He played baseball for Wake Forest College, a member of the 1949 NCAA runner-up champions and earned All American honors. He coached semi-pro baseball for many years in South Dakota (the Bison league) and Nova Scotia, Canada (Truro, Halifax and Dartmouth teams) and was inducted into the Nova Scotia Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Physical Education Department at North Carolina State University from 1955-1980 and ran the intramural program for many years. He ran a referee booking agency for North Carolina referees for high school athletics and college sports for many years. He was a founding member of Raleigh Country Club, a member of Macgregor Downs, Wildwood, and North Ridge Country Clubs, owner and operator of Lake Park Swim Club (1978-2001) and on the Board of Directors of State Employees Credit Union.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 30 at Mitchell Funeral Home at 6 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 31 at Highland United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests funds be donated to the North Carolina State University, University Recreation Fund for Intramural Sports, Attn. Becky Bumgardner in the Development Office, PO Box 7501, Raleigh, NC 27695-7501.
