Beba was born on March 6, 1932, on the island of Rhodes, Greece, to Elias and Stamatia Hangelia. In 1935, at just three years old, she emigrated with her mother and brother through Ellis Island aboard the Conte Grande, joining her father in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
Her family later settled in Burlington, North Carolina, where she graduated from Burlington High School. Following graduation, she moved to Washington, DC, and began her career at the FBI, working first in the typing pool, then in the records department, before being assigned as an assistant to two FBI agents. Whenever asked about her time at the FBI, she would mention that she rode on the elevator with J. Edgar Hoover.
On August 31,1952, she married George P. Zevgolis. They shared 58 years of marriage until his passing in 2010. After taking time away from work to raise her children, she resumed her Federal career at the Naval Research Laboratory, where she served with dedication and distinction for nearly 40 years before retiring in 1996.
In retirement, she and George relocated to the Raleigh, NC area in 2000. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where she was active in the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Her faith and service were recognized with the Archangel Michael Award, and in 2020, she was nominated for the National Philoptochos AGAPE Award.
Beba was an avid fan of the Carolina Hurricanes and was a season ticket holder well into her eighties. She got to ride the Zamboni between periods of a Canes game, and she touched the Stanley Cup after the Canes won the Cup in 2006.
Beba was predeceased by her parents, Elias and Stamatia Hangelia; her brother, Michael Hangelia; and her husband, George.
