

Betty Boggs Cornwell passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Born in Cleveland County, North Carolina, in 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Spurling Boggs. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Cornwell, Sr.; a sister, Kathleen Warlick; and three brothers, Lloyd, Dwight and Johnny Boggs.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Fred E. Cornwell, Jr. and wife Margaret of Brevard, NC; a daughter, Christine C. Wilson and husband William of Raleigh. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lisa W. Harmon and husband Matt of Raleigh; Jeff C. Wilson of Raleigh; step-grandson Kris Veronesi of Mills River, NC; four great grandchildren, Leah, Molly, Daniel, and Jack Harmon of Raleigh; a niece and a number of nephews.
She attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC. After her marriage in 1947, she became an active member of Double Shoals Baptist Church where, among other things, she was a GA leader. She also served as secretary for the Kings Mountain Baptist Association in Shelby, NC. In 1962, she moved from Shelby to Columbia, SC. The family joined North Trenholm Baptist Church where she served as educational secretary for thirteen years, taught an adult Sunday School class for many years, and was an active member of Baptist Women. She also served as a volunteer at Palmetto Health Baptist Medical Center for 35 plus years.
She lived at Waterford Retirement Community in Columbia for six years before moving in 2015 to Whispering Pines Retirement Community in Raleigh, where she became a member of Greystone Baptist Church.
A family graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Double Shoals Baptist Church in Shelby, NC, where she will be buried beside her late husband. Rev. R. Brian Johnson will be officiating.
