Born on February 17, 1928 in Raleigh, the last of 6 children of Major Ervin & Roxannah Sotonica (Tonnye) Ellington Smith, he had fond memories of his childhood on N. Bloodworth St. in Oakwood. Later he lived at his mother's homeplace, the W. J. Ellington home, on old Harrison Ave., which is now W. Morgan St., taking care of his Aunt Bertha. He lived in a nearby house apartment for years but after a hospital stay, moved in February to Oliver House, Wendell.
A 1946 Hugh Morson High School grad, he attended State College & then UNC-Chapel Hill graduating in 1953. From 1953-1961, he served in the Army as a teletype operator. In the mid-1960's, he attended the Jung Institute (analytical psychology) in Zurich, Switzerland.
He enjoyed camping and canoeing, especially in the Great Smokies, the Adirondacks, & Canada. He could often be seen reading on the Ellington porch swing. His favorite author was Laurens Van Der Post, whose life experiences, especially with the African Bushmen, captivated him. Carl's smile, laugh, twinkling blue eyes, voice, & interesting conversations will be greatly missed.
The family is deeply appreciative to those who befriended and helped him through the years.
Predeceased by siblings Olivia Rose Wiggins, Thurston, Wayland, & Wm. Elbert, he is survived by a sister, Gladys Cheek, and nephews/nieces: Gary, David, & June Cheek, Michael Smith & Sharon Smallwood, Janice W. Clevenger, and Ervin & Kent Smith.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9th, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St., followed by a 2:00 p.m. graveside service at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, officiated by Rev. David Mallory of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church.
