Charles Donald Boddie, affectionately known as Donald to his family and Uncle Dundee to his nieces and nephews, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2025, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was 73 years old.
Born in Nashville, NC on December 28, 1951, Donald was the son of Lillie Marie Boddie, who survives him, and the late Charles Franklin Boddie. During his childhood and adolescence, he spent a considerable amount of time living with his late grandparents, Robert Astor Boddie and Bessie Mae Boddie.
Donald honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1974, achieving the rank of Sergeant. That same sense of duty, discipline, and quiet strength stayed with him throughout his life.
For most of his professional career, Donald worked at Consolidated Diesel Company, where he built lasting connections and contributed with pride and commitment.
In his younger years, Donald had a deep love for adventure, expression, and creativity. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, practicing martial arts, playing tennis and basketball, writing, and cooking. He was also a talented percussionist who performed with local bands — a passion that allowed him to share his rhythm and joy with others. These hobbies reflected both his energetic spirit and thoughtful nature.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence brought warmth and strength to everyone who knew him. He is survived by his three daughters: Kimberly Dawson of Raleigh, NC; Kendell McClain of Rocky Mount, NC; and Chanel Smith of Atlanta, GA. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Ashley Dawson; Khalil and Zanae McClain; and Noah Sherill II and Tiffany Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Aaliegha and Qua'Lee Judd.
He is also survived by his loving siblings: Benjamin Boddie, Judy Boddie, Keith Boddie, Lamonte Boddie, and Danny Richardson.
Donald will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his enduring spirit, and the love he gave so generously. He always had the right words to say and was cool as a fan — a calm, steady presence who made people feel heard and cared for. His sharp wit and unforgettable jokes could light up any room, and his laughter will echo in our hearts for years to come. His legacy of kindness, strength, humor, and creativity will continue to inspire all who knew and cherished him.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday July 12, 2025 at 1:00pm in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612.
