Chuck was born to Merritt and Esther Bremer in Utica, New York, the oldest of six children. He had three brothers: Robert (Suzanne), Richard (Marilyn), Merritt (Carol), and two sisters: Sally Sexton (Craig) and Nancy Morehouse (Henry).
As a teenager, Chuck worked in his grandparents’ grocery store, C.H. Bremer and Co., the largest of its kind before chain stores and known throughout Upstate N.Y. Chuck loved to tell the story of his grandmother’s recipe for mayonnaise being purchased by Hellman’s because her recipe outsold theirs.
At age 18 and at the onset of WWII, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and completed the Officers’ Candidate School course. He joined the 306th Bombardment Unit. He became a Navigator of B-17s after two years of study at Middle Georgia College, and subsequently flew many missions from London to Germany. When he returned home to Utica, Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Constance Quinn. He spent a lifelong career in the HVAC equipment industry. He retired as a Senior Vice President and National Director of Marketing for Reznor Corp. in Mercer, PA. After retirement he moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where his wife, Constance, died shortly thereafter.
Chuck met and married his current wife, Lillian Allen Bremer, of Raleigh, NC, where they have resided for the past 27 years. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Carolina Country Club and The Assembly. His personal pleasures were being with family, keeping up with fellow WWII heroes at Air Force reunions, travel, golf, fine food and all sports.
In addition to his loving wife, Lillian, Chuck is survived by four children: Pamela (Arthur) Sands of Ft. Collins, CO, Sharon (Robert) Tattle of Phoenix, AZ, Susan (Dave) Anna of Chapel Hill, NC, and Charles Jr. “Chip” (Carolyn) of Charlotte, NC. Chuck had 12 grandchildren: Richard (Danielle) Sands, David (Rachel) Sands, Weston Sands; Andrew Tattle, Quinn Tattle, Cameron Tattle; Michael (Morgan) Anna, Bryan Anna, Mark Anna, Paige Anna; William Bremer and Lauren Bremer; and four great-grandchildren: Ella, Addison, and Tyson Sands (children of Richard and Danielle Sands), and Brooks Anna. He is also survived by stepchildren and step grandchildren: Page (George) Littlewood of Durham, NC, and their children Grey (Hannah), Drew and Ellison; Ellison (Dan) Henderson of Birmingham, AL, and her children Ross and Ellison Gray; and Ross Jones and Susan Owens, of Atlanta, GA.
The family wishes to extend deepest thanks to the staff at Mayview Convalescent Home in Raleigh for their special care, to Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh for their compassion and support, and to Dr. William Dunlap of Raleigh for decades of personal and professional attention.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church (120 East Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27601) on Wednesday December 14, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following burial at the Church’s Memorial Garden.
