Raleigh – Dennis Oliver Martin (“Denny”), 89, beloved husband of Jean Martin (“Jeannie”), went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday afternoon, February 24, with his loving wife at his bedside.
Denny was born on June 15, 1936, in Heidrick, Knox County, Kentucky, to the late Dennis and Vernetta (McDonald) Martin. He graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, Ohio, where the Lord blessed him with meeting the love of his life, Jeannie. He attended Miami University and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity before earning his Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Union College in Kentucky.
Following graduation, Denny began a career with the federal government. He worked at Newark Air Force Station and later at the Environmental Protection Agency, where he served as an Executive Officer until his retirement.
His life reflected steady faith, quiet strength, and devotion to both his Lord and family. Denny was a warm and affable man who formed many lifelong friendships. For more than 50 years, he was a faithful member of Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church, where he served in numerous roles and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He found great enjoyment on the golf course, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Denny is survived by his son and daughter-in-law; his grandson; his granddaughter and her husband; and a great-grandson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Joanne Oldiges and Carolyn Martin, and his aunt, Lois Cole, along with many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Denny was preceded in death by their son, David Briggs Martin; his parents; his sister, Janice Collier, and her husband, Dr. Ronald Collier; his brothers, Byron Lionel (“Barry”) Martin and Terry Wayne Martin; and his brother-in-law, Gerald Oldiges.
The family expresses appreciation to the staff of Stewart Health Center and Transitions LifeCare for their compassionate care.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 2:00pm. Mr. Martin was buried during a private ceremony in Raleigh Memorial Park.
