Doris La June Rose Barbour

Doris La June Rose Barbour of Raleigh died April 5, 2013 in Wilmington, NC following a brief illness. She was lovingly cared for in her final days by her daughter, Elise Ward Rasmussen Ace, and grandchildren, Courtney Rose Rasmussen and William Ward Rasmussen.

June was born in Oklahoma and spent her childhood in Fort Worth, Texas, where she was crowned Miss Fort Worth. One of the first women to receive a college scholarship in Texas, June majored in psychology at Texas Christian University. She was proud of her membership in the Monticello Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Rose Clan of Scotland.

Her professional career began with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and included several years in Washington, DC as a Capitol Hill speechwriter. She retired as Director of Public Relations from the North Carolina Division of Aging. She received numerous awards for her service to the state of North Carolina. In 2000, Governor Jim Hunt granted her the distinction of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

June is preceded in death by two husbands, Fred Thomas Ward and Joseph Henry Barbour. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Elise Rose Ward Rasmussen Ace, and son-in-law, Brian George Ace, and two beautiful grandchildren, Courtney Rose Rasmussen and William Ward Rasmussen, all of Hampshire, England, and her special companion, a cairn terrier, Miss Lady.

A visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 with a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
