Edith Cash Grissom Shelden, a resident of Waltonwood Lake Boone died Sunday September 3, 2023. Edith was a Vance County native, the daughter of the late Charles Wade and Effie Glenn Grissom of Kittrell, NC.
She was born August 23, 1928. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Colonel Robert E.H. Shelden, her son, Hugh Winfield Shelden, II, and three sisters, Janie Grissom, Connie McLeod, and Beth Bussey.
Edith was a graduate of Zeb Vance High School and Peace College where she was voted outstanding Senior. After graduation, she was employed with the N.C Department of Revenue. On April 16, 1949, she married Robert in the First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. She and Bob spent the next 26 years pursuing his military career and raising their family. They lived in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Maryland, and upon his retirement, they moved back to Raleigh.
They enjoyed being members of Hayes Barton Baptist Church and the Townsend Class. Edith was an active member of the WMU and enjoyed reading and crafting and was a volunteer at Mayview for many years.
She is survived by her sister, Rachel Grissom; two sons, Charles Edwin Shelden (wife Kathy), and Jeffrey Glenn Shelden (wife Elaine); granddaughter, Sarah Shelden; grandson Matthew Shelden; and step grandsons, Nathan and Scott Fisher.
A funeral service will be held Monday, September 11 at 11:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC.
Memorials in her memory may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church (1800 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27608) or to a charity of one’s choice.
