I'm quite late in posting this memory, but wanted to do so anyway as I happened to be thinking about Ed.  Once day in my field studies class at Meredith, Janice was unavailable and Ed appeared as our instructor for the evening!  I was amazed that he was so comfortably able to teach the course and at ease in the forest.  When it came time for our quiz to identify plant species, Ed gave us little "hints" that helped immensely!  I was grateful for those hints.  It was wonderful to see the joy he and Janice shared for the outdoors.

My deep sympathy over the loss of Ed. I have such fond memories of Ed. He was always so kind and thoughtful and always sensitive to everyone’s feelings and position in family’s and in life. I will always remember his thoughtful ways. I’m am so very sorry for your loss Janice. 

I am deeply saddened to hear of Ed's recent journey.  He and Janice have had so many wonderful ones together.  This last is perhaps the greatest although it may not seem like it right now.  What a gift he was and is to all whoever knew him.  The strength they have made together over the years will surely sustain dear Janice now.

I was saddened to learn of Ed's passing in the July 23rd edition of Clarion's Alumni News magazine.  I have very fond memories of our time at Clarion. He was my "Big Brother" in the Theta Xi Fraternity. A good friend and true gentleman.  My sympathy and prayers go out to the whole family.

Just learned of this passing!  I am so sorry for my beloved college adviser, Dr. Janice Swab, who has meant so much to me over the years. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Ed only once or twice and he seemed so full of life!  My heart goes out to the whole family for this untimely loss!  My prayers are with you all!

Ed and Janice have been my dear friends for over twenty years. I remember Ed's love of birds and how he taught me to "cup my ears" and listen for the bird calls. Ed I hope you are able to listen to birds forever.

Ed and I worked together on and off over several years.  We had the most fun that could be had working in tough conditions.  I will miss his energetic and fun presence dearly.

Ed was a terrific, enthusiastic, curious, and intelligent guy who was full of fun and always ready for the next adventure.  I remember him with great fondness, especially when he would explain to me the physics and mechanics of sundials!  When I visited him at Duke Medical Center weeks before his death, he was undaunted and still thoroughly himself.  Rest in Peace, Good Man!

I first met Ed and Janice on a safari in Kenya back in 1991. I was immediately drawn to them both. Ed and I shared a love of birds on that trip. I'll never forget Ed's passion for those birds and frustration when the truck stopped for mammals, but not every bird we saw!  I've loved hearing about all the travels Ed and Janice have gone on over the years in their annual Christmas letters. I was fortunate to have them both visit me once in Alaska. Ed, you will be so missed!

To My Swab Cousins,
  My deepest sympathies for the loss of your brother.  I remember Eddie's antics at the farm when we were kids.  I'm glad he had a good life.

We remember the gift of his presence here in Italy.  Ed's knowledge of the natural world and its creatures which he generously shared,have enlarged our world.  You will be missed.

I first met Ed on a field trip organized to visit grasslands in Kansas.  Ed was a kind, gentle, sincere person.  The last time I saw him, he had obviously been ill, but his bright eyes and enthusiastic smile were as boyish and engaging as ever. I'm sorry to see him go.  He was a rare bird, and he will be missed.

Dear Ed,

Thank you for being an incredibly kind, compassionate human being, already willing to help others with your store of very considerable, thoughtful knowledge, and do it in such a gentle, humble way that those of us being instructed never felt intimidated, nor put off.

Thank you for recording some on the English-in-Mongolian program, and thank you for meeting my students.

We are all the richer for it.

This evening, I'll flight some liquor skywards and think of you.

It was wonderful to know you.

Ed showed me many things... how to appreciate a ruderal community, how to use the word "ruderal" properly in a report, how to stage a field mutiny when the mosquitos were thicker than the air (Bertie County Landfill), and the importance of REAL ice cream.  

The world is a better place because Ed was part of it, and it is now a bit more hollow with his passing.

Ed took his shirt off, wrapped my wrist in it, and hauled me off to the hospital when I chopped my wrist with a machete at Tulula Bog about 15 years ago.  Over the years, Ed has had an impact on me and my view on life that will never be forgotten.  Wes Newell.
