What a loss to our neighborhood and the entire Carolina Arbors Community but what a gain for heaven!  Gene was such a wonderful person;  always to help those in need of advice of what was going on with concerns about their property and always having an answer as to what must be done to correct the problem.  He and Bobbie have been such an asset to our neighborhood.  I will miss Gene for his energy and passion and the great discussions we had.  We all mourn the loss of Gene with Bobbie and her family.  Rest in peace dear friend!

Dear Bobbie and family,
Over the years, I learned that everyone seemed to know Gene and like him.  He was happy to make the time to answer any questions or stop by and offer some expert advice, if asked.  He was a rare person who was willing to freely give his expertise, time, and physical efforts to his community and ask nothing in return.  His presence will always be felt here and he will be remembered fondly.
 Bobbie,  please know Joyce and I will hold you and your family in our thoughts at this sad time.

Gene was a man with a nature as beautiful as the natural world he so loved. He unselfishly gave countless hours using his expertise to improve his community and educating his fellow neighbors along the way. He will be sorely missed but we are all the better for having known him.  We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bobbie and his family.

Gene was always smiling and had such a great energy. We loved having him as a volunteer at the JC Raulston Arboretum. He would often call me and ask how he could help.  He enjoyed leading tours of the garden, sharing his love for NC State University, the Arboretum and all the trees and plants he was so familiar with.  He was a hard working member of the Tuesday Rovers Garden Team and he will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to Bobbie and the whole family. 

My husband Barry and I were so fortunate to have known Gene and Bobbi.  We were blessed to have met them as being the next door neighbors  of my sister, Bonnie.  We  will  always be grateful for his kindness shown to my mother and sister.  He gave us such a deep feeling of watching over them as we live in Penna. and only saw him on our visits there. His smile was infectious and his love of nature will live on in our hearts.

Our deepest sympathy to his family and pray that God gives them  the strength to get through this most difficult of times.

Gene was the modern embodiment of the well-known Johnny Appleseed. Gene was a nurseryman, a lover of animals and insects, and a generous man to his family and community.  He gave far more than he ever took and he deserved the adulation of his community. We have all been touched by Gene in one way or another. And for this, we are most thankful. He made our lives better. We are ever thankful to his family for sharing him with us. May Gene rest in the peace of the Lord. Undoubtedly, he will be making some contribution to the Garden of Eden, making it even better!

Gene has been a blessing to friends, family and the community in which he lived and so lovingly tended.
Gene, we will miss you, but we take comfort in knowing that you are at peace among the wildflowers in heaven. What you have lovingly done for us all will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace.  May God bless and comfort your loved ones in this time of loss.  Your memory will be a lasting blessing to us all.

Having Gene and Bobbie next door for the past 8 years has truly been a blessing.  Gene's knowledge, expertise, and helpfulness amazed me.  He was like a big brother - the first one I called if there was a snake in the yard, if I needed assistance with a heavy item, or questions about my yard.  He helped with little things like blowing off my porch or fertilizing my yard without me ever asking.  His smile and chuckle was infectious.  And since we shared the ever shrinking News and Observer, I smiled every day seeing all the puzzles completed in red ink;  what a guy!  He loved  nature, birds, gardening and most of all his family.  I will think of him every time I see a falcon dive into the pond for a fish as he so enjoyed watching them.    His legacy is one of uncompromised service to his family, community, and country.  He was a wonderful, selfless man and will be greatly missed.

There are many things about Gene that will be missed. His pointing out turtles bathing in the pond to his granddaughter, making certain that he and John would always choose the best looking plants for many yards, Driving me to Big Duke at night and coming back for me a few hours later.  His kindness and smile will always be a wonderful memory.








Gene and Bobbie have been around for me for many years wearing many hats;to guide me through tragedies or a simple;what kind of lizard is this.They worked as a team and helped each other.One time I mentioned an important bush down in the woods to Gene that was being swallowed up by vines.The next thing I know,he was down there to save the bush!Gene was generous with his time and his good nature.I was very fortunate to live very close to them.
