Eva Nancy Kurpil Sasnowitz, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed to Heaven to be with Jesus her Lord on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Eva was 90 years old, and was a resident of Raleigh for the past 30 years, and of Swan Lake, NY for 30 years prior to that.
She was the 11th of 12 children born to John Kurpil and Mary (Warcholiak) Kurpil in Parksville, NY in 1935. The family was poor, but music and joy filled their lives along with periodic mayhem from her brothers, who liked to scare the engine drivers of the trains that came through their property by creating human pyramids on the tracks. Eva loved school and attended Liberty High School in Liberty, NY, graduating in 1952, a year ahead of her class. She then attended the Brooklyn Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1955 as a Registered Nurse. She worked as an RN in Middletown, Monticello, Harris, and Liberty, NY in both hospitals and in private duty before retiring early to raise her family.
Eva loved music. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang with her siblings on local radio station WVOS when they were young. She enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley throughout her life, and she shared her love of music with her children. She devoted her life to her family as a dedicated mother and grandmother, moving from Sullivan County, NY to Raleigh, NC when her children married and settled into the area.
Eva was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Liberty, NY. Later in life, she enjoyed attending church at First Assembly of God in Raleigh with her friends.
Eva is survived by her three children and their families: Amy Rumford and husband Doug of Raleigh, NC and their daughters Sara and Sophia; Harold Sasnowitz and wife Sandra of Raleigh, NC and children Brittany, Jessica, Evan, Claret, and Christopher Hanna; and Mary Jane Bouchard of Ohio and her children Stephen Sasnowitz and Robert Bouchard. Each of her nine grandchildren enjoyed a special relationship with Grandma E, and she had 4 great-grandchildren. Eva is also survived by her younger sister, Josie DeVoe of Livingston Manor, NY, and many nieces and nephews. Eva is predeceased by her parents, John and Mary; four older sisters Katherine Somesla, Annie Vuono, Rose Brown, and Helen Mudry along with their husbands, by 5 brothers Charlie, Nick, Andrew, Steve, and Peter, along with their wives, and brother Sam Kurpil, whose wife Frances is a resident of Liberty, NY.
Family and friends are invited to Eva's funeral service at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh NC 27612, on Saturday, August 9 at 1:30, followed by a graveside prayer at the adjacent Raleigh Memorial Park. There will be a gathering at the Rumford residence following services for everyone to share their memories together.
