Evelyn Burrer Cousino passed peacefully on June 4, 2021 in the comfort of her loving family by her side. Born on September 16, 1920, in Monroeville, Ohio; she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Burrer.

Evelyn enjoyed working for the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services from 1964 until 1987 when she retired. Following her retirement she worked part-time for the NC Assistive Technology Program office in Raleigh, until the age of 87. Up until her death she enjoyed meeting many of her former co-workers for lunch several times a year. When asked to what she attributed her longevity, she teasingly replied "designer genes".

Evelyn loved all her family, friends and neighbors. She was an inspiration to all with her wisdom, strength and great sense of humor...she was a joy to be around. Family gatherings and holidays were treasured events. She enjoyed going to Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh.

She is survived by five children: Ron Cousino (Connie) of New Bern, Renee Cousino of Southern Pines, Yvonne Cousino (Don) of Greensboro, Gary Cousino of Pittsboro and Denise Green (Len) of Stanwood, WA.; nine grandchildren; Michelle Hobson (Stacy), Rod and Charlie Keller (Allison), Adam and Jordan Fox, Noel Estes (Douglas), Kate Spurling (Tim), Erin and Neal Green; and twelve great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the caregivers that provided love and care in her later months from Home Instead, Rex Home Healthcare, Avendelle Assisted Living and Transitions LifeCare Hospice in Raleigh.

"No more worries, no more bills, no more illness, no more pills, don't be sad, be very glad, I'm on my way and it's a wonderful day!" ~ by Evelyn Cousino

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, June 27th from 1-3 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home - 7209 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. Donations in Evelyn's name may be directed to Transitions LifeCare - 250 Hospice Circle - Raleigh, NC 27607.

This remarkable woman was my mom. I am the youngest of five pretty incredible sibs.

Mom kept me well fed, well clothed, well housed; all in all well loved. I begged for horses and she got me one! And another. And another. ( Not all at the same time!) She supported.her horse crazy daughter and gave me the freedom to follow my passions. Perhaps she knew there was no stopping me. And she was right!

Mom, thank you so much for raising me to be a strong, independent horsewoman.
( I thank the horses too) Thanks for putting up with all the dogs and cats I brought home. Thanks for curling my super long hair for proms. Thanks for moving us close enough to the stables so I could walk to them! Thanks for almost always letting me move back home, Thank you for when you said no. You were right. Love you! See you one day in the Courts of the King!

Evelyn was my supervisor years ago, and a great role model. She provided me the opportunity to leave keypunch, which led to other possibilities. We kept in touch over the years, and exchanged birthday wishes. I’m going to miss my Cousi card, with her signature happy balloons. I was also lucky enough to see her at the retirement lunch bunch for the last few years, and to be at her 100th birthday - where I was glad to meet so many of your family. She was so proud of all of you. My condolences on your loss.

Beautiful, classy, strong and independent... My Aunt Evelyn, my mother's sister. I will cherish the photos that my cousin Renee and I have shared of our mothers and insight of my aunt's wonderful personality and love for her family.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
From the poem 'Broken Chain'.

Evelyn was much loved by her friends and coworkers at the NC Assistive Technology Program (NCATP). She helped me start up the program and was always a delight! I appreciated her sense of humor, strong work ethic and her “tell it like it is” approach. I am so happy she lived a long and fulfilling life. I have many precious memories of her. She was one of a kind in all the best possible ways. Condolences to all her family. She spoke highly of you all often. She treasured each and every one of you. - Ricki Hiatt
