Evelyn Rhodes Flowers, born December 19, 1920 in Wilmington, NC to Oscar L Rhodes and Hepsie Marie Rhodes, passed from this earth to her heavenly home on October 17, 2015. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years Enoch D. (Don) Flowers, and her sons, Donald L. Flowers and Frederick L. Flowers. She was also pre-deceased by brothers, Oscar L. Rhodes and Albert F. Rhodes, and sister, Grace W. Rhodes.
She is survived by her daughters-in-law Christine S. Flowers, Gail M. Flowers and Sandra W. Flowers. She is also survived by Christine’s girls Sheri and Rene and husband Miles, and their children McCabe and Eleanor respectively. Surviving are nephews Scott, Wayne, David, Mike and Mark Rhodes in addition to a niece, Betsy Rhodes Herring, as well as the treasured great-nephews and nieces of the next generation.
During her career days, Evelyn represented Avon Products and rose to district manager prior to her retirement from that direct service industry which suited her so well, since she never met a stranger. And if she did, it was not long before they were loyal friends.
To the end, she was always more concerned about others rather than herself. Near and dear to her heart were not only her family but her swim team. They were constantly on her mind, and to be able to go out for coffee with them after she was forced to retire from the pool was always a highlight.
Special recognition is due her primary care-givers Viola (Butch) Powers and Rita Mangum whose devoted service allowed her to spend her latter days in her own home, receive her friends on the good days, and rest as comfortably as possible on the bad days.
In addition, thanks go to her neighbors who showed their kindness in so many ways…and to the Transitions LifeCare staff for their professional and personal attention over the past few months.
But, to all who came into her presence, they know there was never a more GIVING person. She gave until her very last breath. Now, she is at peace.
A graveside service will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday the 22nd. In lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to Transitions LifeCare or to the SPCA in her memory.
