Frederick Philips Wood, Jr., died peacefully at home after a period of declining health. The son of the late Frederick Philips Wood and Elizabeth Roberts Wood, Fred grew up in Edenton, North Carolina, along with his many cousins. Fred’s magical childhood summers were spent at Nags Head.
Fred truly loved his time at Episcopal High School, where he made lifelong friends. Afterwards, he graduated with a degree in English from The University of North Carolina, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and was named ‘ACC Outstanding Freshman in Track and Field.’
After settling in Raleigh, Fred opened his CPA practice and married his wife, Elaine Wooten Wood. They had three sons.
Surviving Mr. Wood, in addition to his wife, are his sons: Frederick Philips Wood III and partner Lee Williams Erickson, Jr., of New Orleans, LA; Edward Wooten Wood and wife Katherine; and Surry Cowper Wood and wife Sarah, all of Raleigh. In addition, he is survived by his four granddaughters: Margaret Henderson Wood, Charlotte Cowper Wood, Evelyn Roberts Wood, and Florence Katherine Wood. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Wood Parrish of Richmond, VA, and his stepbrother, Joseph Debnam of Irmo, SC.
Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed hunting, spending time in Chapel Hill, and gathering on the front porch at Nags Head with family and friends. Above all, he was a gentleman who will be remembered for his kindness, honesty, and generosity.
The Wood family is grateful for the love their friends and extended family showed them over the last several years. They are forever thankful for the care provided by Regina and Ricky Williams, Bernadette Tucker, Robert Hill, Sharon McCullers, and Tia Shepard.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
