Gladys Smith Cheek

Gladys Smith Cheek, 96, passed away Saturday morning, October 1, 2016 at Morningside Assisted Living in Raleigh. She was born on April 22, 1920 in Raleigh to the late Major Ervin Smith and Roxannah Sotonica “Tonnye” Ellington Smith. Gladys graduated from Hugh Morrison High School and Hardbargers Business School. She was a lifelong member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in Raleigh.

Gladys met and married Thomas Everett Cheek on December 20, 1940 and they enjoyed 67 wonderful years of marriage. Together they raised their three children, David, Gary and June. Gladys loved her children, family and friends. She enjoyed being outside especially at the beach and working in her yard and garden.

She is survived by her two children: David W. Cheek and wife Anne, of Irvington, VA, and June Kyna Cheek, of Raleigh; daughter-in-law: Sara Cheek, of Brooklyn, NY; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Anne Carter Cheek and husband, Maunsel Hickey and John David Walton Cheek and wife, Kathleen; four great-grandchildren: Olivia Rivers and Maunsel Carter Hickey and Hannah and Westley Cheek; and by other family and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; son, Gary Cheek, and her five siblings.

Graveside Services, officiated by Rev. David Mallory, will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Oakwood Cemetery.

Special appreciation is given to Transitions LifeCare and to Morningside for their attentive care during her stay and especially in her last few days.
