Harold Gene Hall was born on August 10, 1935, in Fayetteville, NC to Jeanette Graham Hall and Frank Hall. He died at home on September 28, 2025. His early years were influenced by his father’s station assignment at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and their subsequent return to Fayetteville. He was educated in Fayetteville and graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1953. He and his family were loyal members of Highland Presbyterian Church. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Harold’s love of helping others led him to law school at Wake Forest University.
While Harold was working in Winston-Salem, NC he met a social worker named Ann Battle Smith. Their courtship led to a lifelong love and commitment, resulting in his marriage to Ann in Goldsboro, NC on August 19, 1961. Their married life began in Raleigh as they moved to Country Club Homes Apartments. This was a wonderful time as Harold and Ann developed many lifelong friendships that their children continue to maintain. Harold began his professional life in Raleigh as an Assistant Trust Officer at Wachovia Bank and Trust Company. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1960 until 1966. Harold eventually moved into private law practice in Raleigh for many years, serving in a professional and dedicated way. He found satisfaction in helping his clients with estate, probate, real estate and other general law issues while never drawing attention to himself.
Harold and Ann were blessed with two children, James Graham and Mary Battle. Their life in Raleigh was centered around friends and their membership in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. He served many years on the Vestry of St. Michaels including a term as Senior Warden, an elected position. Harold inherited a love of fishing and boating which helped lead to them having a house at Topsail Beach, NC. He was a devoted member of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club and the Carolina Country Club. In retirement he could often be found working in his yard on Yelverton Circle.
In addition to his daughter Mary Battle Roethling and husband Peter, and son Jim and wife Stephanie, he is survived by his grandchildren Katherine Roethling, Emma Hall Wimberley and husband Conner, Meredith Roethling Wiles and husband Stephen, Charles Miller Roethling, William Graham Hall and Alexander Crowell Hall. He is also survived by his nephew Frank Hall and his wife Rachel and their family. He was predeceased by his brother Charles.
Harold’s wife Ann died in June 2025, and he will be interred next to her in the columbarium at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church following Harold’s funeral on October 10, 2025, at 2:00 pm at St. Michael’s. A reception will follow services in the church parish hall.
