Hugh resided at the Stewart Health Center of the Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh where he was lovingly cared for by their devoted staff and volunteers. Transitions LifeCare hospice services also provided excellent support and compassion for him and the family in his final days.
Hugh was husband to Raleigh native, Ruth Gray Williams, for 70 years and father of David Gray Williams (Julia Williams), and Blanche Williams Heidengren (John Heidengren). He was grandfather to Todd Williams, Stephen Williams, Allison (Williams) Kalsbeek, Jonathan Heidengren, Alexander Heidengren, Katherine Heidengren, Nathaniel Heidengren, and Nicholas Heidengren. He was great-grandfather to nine children - eight boys and one girl.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his parents, Hugh A. Williams, Sr. and Mattie Blanche Williams, his sister Elva (Williams) Cook, and his grandson, Alexander Heidengren.
Hugh grew up in Spencer with an avid love for railroading as his father was a conductor on the Southern Railway for over 50 years. He attended North Carolina State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1948 and a Master of Science in Diesel Engineering in 1950. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in Bakersfield, California, until WWII ended in 1945.
Hugh married Ruth Gray, and they moved to Ohio and Illinois where Gray and Blanche were born. He worked for 33 years for the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors in LaGrange, Illinois as a Staff Engineer of Advanced Mechanical Technology, as well as Senior Project Engineer and Supervisor of Product Development for the engine design section where he received several patents for innovative fuel injection system design.
He was an active member of the Raleigh Host Lions club, the Jamestown Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He was also a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh, North Carolina. He enjoyed serving at his church, gathering genealogy information, railroading, and being with the grandchildren.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on a date to be announced.
