Ilene Berko Cagan

Born on December 3, 1957, in the Bronx, New York, Ilene was raised in Central New Jersey. She graduated from American University in 1979 with a degree in Criminal Justice. At American, Ilene met her lifelong partner and spouse of 45 years, Randy.

Ilene obtained a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University in 1982 and began her social work career in New York, focusing on Youth Services Planning. In 1985, Randy & Ilene relocated to North Carolina, and Ilene continued her career in with Wake County Government in youth services. She also helped to co-found Jewish Family Services, assisting seniors as a caseworker, as well as coordinating the settlement of Jewish refugee families. Ilene was very proud to cofound the Beth Meyer Preschool, which filled a major need in the Jewish community.

Ilene was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Rachel and Alexandra, supporting them in all their endeavors. Years later, Ilene became an equally loving mother-in-law to Jason and Adam, and grandmother to Mason and Logan.

Known for her high energy and engaging personality, sharp mind, joyful spirit, and warm smile, Ilene loved talking to friends, which she made so easily. She loved to travel, hike, cook, shop, read, and share coffee, wine, and stories. Ilene was a huge Springsteen fan, because at her core she was a Jersey Girl.

Ilene is survived by her husband of 45 years Randy, her daughters Rachel (Jason) and Alexandra (Adam), her grandchildren Mason Benjamin and Logan Eli and her sister, Helayne (Michael) and sister-in-law Shari (Rich). She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Lenore Berko.

A funeral service was held at Temple Beth Or Wednesday, June 18th at 10AM followed by burial at Raleigh Memorial Park.

A funeral service for Ilene will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
