Born April 11, 1929 – Dover, North Carolina
John Melvin Humphrey, beloved son of Nellie Mildred Whitley and Tobe Melvin Humphrey, was born on April 11, 1929, in Dover, North Carolina. As a young boy, he was baptized in the Neuse River, marking the beginning of a lifelong devotion to his faith and his church—both of which remained central to his life.
In sixth grade, a teacher sparked in Melvin a passion for woodworking, a craft that became one of his lifelong joys. His remarkable skill and love for working with his hands left a lasting impression on family and friends, who will remember him not only for his craftsmanship but also for the care and heart he poured into every piece he made.
In 1948, Melvin began a long and distinguished career at Dix Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, starting as an assistant night supervisor. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Louise Grant. The two married in 1950 and together built a beautiful life, raising five children, Jimmy, Bonnie, Loretta, David and Daryl.
Over the course of 30 years, Melvin rose through the ranks at Dix Hospital, ultimately serving as the Director of Occupational Therapy. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to healing touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy in the community he served so faithfully.
Melvin’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He was deeply loved by his ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren who will always cherish his wisdom, gentle spirit, and the unconditional love he gave so freely.
The Humphrey family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of Benson Memorial United Methodist Church, as well as the dedicated staff of Heartland Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care, for your compassion, care, and unwavering support.
