A long-time resident of Raleigh, Jeff grew up in Clearwater, Florida, and later graduated from Western Carolina University. Jeff was an employee of GSK for thirty years, where he made lifelong friends. He enjoyed running, biking, and reading nonfiction, adding to his vast knowledge of world history. He was a tenacious problem solver. A music enthusiast, Jeff loved old movies, the ocean, and time with friends and family. Several years ago, he began studying Buddhism, and its tenets brought him peace. He was content. As described by his son-in-law, Brendan, Jeff was “understated, impartial…he did everything with a strong conscience.”
Jeff is preceded in death by his parents, Stuart Vanderveer and Carrie Beaty Thorn. Surviving are his wife of thirty-six years, Martha, and their three daughters, Nicole, Olivia (Brendan), and Annelise, all of Raleigh, who wish to acknowledge their father’s devotion and his sacrifices for them. Jeff also leaves behind brothers David (Joni) of New Port Richey and Hugh (Amy) of Fernandina Beach and a host of extended family.
A graveside service was held at Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, on Saturday, June 17, at 11:00 am.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Richard Bedlack and the upbeat staff at Duke ALS Clinic, Jeff’s devoted team at Duke Hospice (Veronica, Lindsey, and Lauren), and especially our family and friends for demonstrating inexhaustible love and support.
Those who would like to honor Jeff’s memory may contribute to Duke ALS Clinic (www.gifts.duke.edu/dukehealth), which researches to cure ALS.
