

John Shaheen Nader, 88, passed away on November 28, 2009 to be with the Lord. He was born to parents Thomas and Thecla Nader in Farrell, Pennsylvania on November 16, 1921. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sheila; one remaining sister from a family of 10 siblings, Sr. Catherine Nader, Sisters of the Precious Blood in Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Tina Nader of Sewanee, Tenn. married to the Rev. Walter Brownridge, Jeanne Nader of Alameda, CA married to Patrick Lynch, and Beth Nader of Raleigh, NC married to Lou Gerics; sons, Joe Nader of Cary, NC married to Ann Marie Nader, Tim Nader of Ellicott City, MD married to Anastasia Borichevsky, Dr. Paul Nader of Macungie, PA married to Sue Lintelman, and Peter (deceased); grandchildren, John and Jacqueline Nader, Alec and Martin Brownridge-Nader, Kyra, Sasha and Nick Nader, Steven and Ellie Lintelman-Nader, Maura and Paul Lynch, and Sarah Gerics.After completing high school as salutatorian in Farrell, Pa. he moved to Cincinnati and initially attended Xavier University. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and served until 1943, when he was honorably discharged with a heart condition. He subsequently completed his BS Degree in Electrical Engineering (1944) and a Masters in Physics (1953) from the University of Cincinnati. Throughout his professional career Mr. Nader was driven by a sense of service. As a physicist for the U.S. Public Health Service in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then for the U.S. EPA in RTP, NC, as Chief for the Stationary Source Emission Measurements Section, he led teams in innovative research on air quality, earning a Bronze Medal for Commendable Service in 1974. In conjunction with his career and family life, he was involved in church activities and civic service, including member of the ecumenical board for All Saints Church in Cincinnati, lector and Catholic Eucharistic health care minister for St. Joseph’s Church in Raleigh, Democratic precinct leader in East Raleigh, chairman of the East Raleigh Citizens Advisory Committee and founder of the Triangle Lebanese Association.His focus on service continued after retirement from the EPA, through his work as an air pollution consultant with the International Standards Organization and the World Health Organization. He also served as a team leader for the AARP, providing job counseling workshops in Raleigh and the Atlanta region. Most importantly, as a husband, father, grandfather and friend, John provided unconditional love and support to his family and friends, always putting his responsibilities and their needs before all else.A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, Dec. 5th, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Rd., Raleigh, NC.A visitation for Mr. Nader will be held on Friday, Dec. 4th, 6 to 8 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC. John’s family would also like to express our gratitude to his cardiologist, Dr. Charles Mangano who, for over 25 years, served as an advisor and practitioner in preserving his heart health. Finally, in lieu of flowers, as we are so appreciative of the support provided by the staff of Hospice during the last year of his life, Mr. Nader’s family would suggest donations to Hospice of Wake County Foundation, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
