Joseph Hampton Monk, Jr. passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013 after a brief period of declining health. Born in Raleigh to parents; Joseph H. Monk Sr. and Mary Stokes Monk, he was a long time resident of Raleigh and Clayton, NC.
Joe graduated from Hugh Morson High School. He was a WWII veteran. After the war he enjoyed a rewarding forty year career with the Norfolk Southern Railroad. His joys in life were camping, fishing, vegetable gardening, and his 1970 yellow VW Beetle Convertible. Joe embraced each day of life with a quick wit and positive attitude. He indulged friends and family with humorous and often touching stories of his youth. Surely Joe’s loyal childhood dog, Lady, a shepherd mix, is waiting patiently for him at Heaven’s door.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lelia Gray Sparks Monk, son Danny Gray Monk, sisters; Geraldine Monk Ritchie, Elizabeth Monk Lancaster and Martha Monk.
He is survived by his wife Audrey Denton Monk, son Joseph H. Monk III (Annette) of Knightdale, sister Becky Wooten of Cary, grandsons; Joseph H. Monk IV (Betsy) of Clayton, Kevin (Stephanie) of Raleigh, five great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Joe is also survived by stepsons; Randall Denton (Mary Ann) of Raleigh, Allan Denton (Mary Ann) of Raleigh, stepdaughter; Mary Ann Mahony (Mike) of Clayton, numerous step, grand and great grandchildren, nieces and one nephew. He enjoyed an abiding love of all and maintained a special relationship with each.
