

Joy Clarke Haywood died peacefully while being cared for at The Rosewood on May, 2. Born in Charlotte on August 18, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Julian Clarke and Elfrieda Ray Clarke.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Elfrieda Jarrell.
She married the love of her life in 1956, Richard Haywood who survives her as well as her children and their families; son, Richard Hunter Haywood, junior and wife, Vandra Knust Haywood, their children, Richard Hunter Haywood III and Paige Marks Haywood; son, Kenneth Clarke Haywood and wife, Tammy Taylor Haywood and their children, Kenneth Clarke Haywood, junior and Anna Taylor Haywood.
Joy graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Women’s College). Once she and Richard married, they moved to Raleigh where they raised their family. Later in life, she attended Meredith College and the New York School of Interior Design. She was active in the Jaycettes and the Raleigh Junior Women’s Club. Joy modeled in many charity fashion shows held in Memorial Auditorium as well as for many area clothing boutiques and for the News and Observer. She was the Mother’s March chairman for the Wake County March of Dimes and continued her involvement for many years.
Joy started her own interior design firm, Joy Haywood Interiors in 1984. After a number of successful years in business, she retired and enjoyed playing golf, bridge and spending time at the beach. Joy was a member of Carolina Country Club, The 2500 Club, The Assembly as well as a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church since 1956.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 12 at the Carolina Country Club from 5 pm until 7 pm. A graveside service will be on Wednesday, May 13 at Oakwood Cemetery at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Joy’s name to Healing Transitions for Women, 1251 Goode Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
