Joy Moore Johnson died on Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Born on February 20, 1944 in Burgaw, Joy grew up in Raleigh, graduating from Needham Broughton High School. From there she went on to Chapel Hill, receiving a B.S. degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina and later a Masters in Nursing from East Carolina University in Greenville. She began teaching nursing at Wake Technical Institute (now Wake Technical Community College) in the 1970’s, specializing in obstetrics until her retirement some thirty years later. She also helped many couples prepare for childbirth in Lamaze classes she organized and taught over the years. She enjoyed many hobbies: cross stitch, quilting, sewing, collecting pottery & antiques, “piddling” in the yard, fly fishing; and she especially enjoyed travelling with her husband and spending time at Lake Gaston with her family and friends. One constant throughout her life was her abundant love for children of all ages. She never met a baby she didn’t want to scoop up, hold, cuddle and coo with for hours. She was a fiercely loyal mother, wife, daughter and friend and worked tirelessly wherever and whenever there was a job needed doing.
Joy was preceded in death by her youngest son, Clifton Edmond Stone, her parents Joseph Ira Moore and Lila Hadnott Moore Shannon, brother Joseph “Skipper” Moore, Jr. and nephew Joseph Karl Moore.
She is survived by her husband of thirty years, Larry Johnson; a son, Robert Stone (special friend, Cassandra Dean) stepson Mo Johnson (wife, Nicole Young Johnson) stepdaughter Melanie Johnson - all of Raleigh, cherished granddaughters: Ryan & Emma Stone, both of Cumming, GA & Mia Johnson of Raleigh along with niece Victoria Moore of Chapel Hill. She also leaves a treasured collection of relatives, extended blended family, friends, former colleagues and hundreds of student nurses she taught to deliver babies for over three decades.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 26, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. A memorial service will be held Saturday February 27th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church (4523 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC).
