Juliette Elizabeth Fulghum Newcomb

Juliette Elizabeth Fulghum Newcomb died peacefully Wednesday morning, October 16th at her home at Magnolia Glen. She was born February 13, 1931 in Montgomery, Alabama and soon moved to Raleigh. She attended Hayes Barton School (now Myrtle Underwood School) and graduated in 1949 from Needham Broughton High School where she was head cheerleader and wrote a teenage column for the News and Observer. Juliette graduated from St. Mary’s Junior College in 1951.

She is survived by her sons Charles Allan Newcomb, Jr. of Crested Butte, Colorado and Robert Thomas “Robbo” Newcomb and his wife Carol Powers Newcomb of Raleigh. Juliette is also survived by her sister Nell Fulghum Wright of Raleigh, her sister-in-law Mary Randolph “Randy” Newcomb of Raleigh, sister-in-law Mrs. James T. “Mimi” Fulghum of Garmisch, Germany and many nieces and nephews.

Juliette is also survived by her two grandchildren Robert Thomas “Bo” Newcomb and Taylor Tharrington Newcomb. Brenda Tribbey has been a wonderful friend and caregiver for several years as have the people with Homewatch Caregivers of Raleigh. We are so grateful for what they have done for the family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles Allan “Bo” Newcomb in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her brother James T. Fulghum and her parents James L. “Dot” Fulghum and Elizabeth Thomas “Tommie” Fulghum.

Outside of her family, Juliette was devoted to her love and service for the Lord and the desire to make Raleigh an even better place to live. She served as President of the Junior League of Raleigh from 1967-1968 and was co-chairman of Governor Robert Scott’s Inaugural Ball. Juliette was appointed to the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Commission, serving for many years and as Vice Chairman. She served on the Raleigh Greenway Commission and the Raleigh Youth Advisory Board as well as many other boards.

A long-time volunteer at Rex Hospital, she served as the Guild President from 1988-1990. She was also a longtime member of the Lost Colony Board of Directors.

For ten years, Juliette and her husband Bo were regional coordinators for “Faith Alive” a lay renewal movement in the Episcopal Church. She was a member of “The Daughters of the King” an Episcopal lay order for prayer and services. She was also a leader and participant in Bible Study Fellowship for many years.

Juliette was a true southern belle who was always young at heart and kind in spirit. She will be missed by all who loved her.

A celebration of Juliette’s life will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh on Friday, October 18th at 11:00AM. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00PM Thursday, October 17th at 3108 Rutherford Drive, Raleigh at the home of Robbo and Carol Newcomb.
