Julius Basel Layton

Julius was born September 23, 1931 in Franklin County, NC to the late Ernest Clinton Layton and Bessie Abernathy Layton.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald; sisters, Eleanor, Lucy, and Poppy; and daughter-in-law, Pamela Layton.

Julius is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jennie Swanson Layton; daughter Hope Moore (Devon); son Ricky Layton (Debra); granddaughter Tracy Mitchell (Scot); grandsons Billy O'Shields and Caleb Layton (Molly); and great grandchildren Ethan Mitchell, Ella Gray and Lanier Layton. Extended family includes: Bill, Shelly, Sarah and Lillian Hodsden. His brothers Buck (Clara) and Jimmy (Irene) and sisters Marie Chadwick, Mavis Nelms, Sue Leonard (Darrel), Annette Roberson (Larry) survive him as well.

Julius worked in the family catering business for over 20 years after his retirement from the NC State government. He was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church, known by everyone as "Papa". He was a faith based believer and taught Sunday school for over 50 years. Julius was a loving husband, father, "Papa" and friend to all.

A Funeral Service will be held 3:30pm Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church, 5510 Falls of Neuse Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1:30pm – 3:15pm prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund or the Friendship Men For Missions.
