Kitty Holt Atkins Fickes

Kitty Holt Atkins Fickes passed away peacefully on November 18th with her family by her side. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on October 5th, 1949, Kitty was the daughter of the late Leroy Cole Atkins and Mary Holt Drewry. After graduating from Broughton High School in 1967, she received an associate’s degree from Stratford College in 1969 and graduated from Campbell College (now Campbell University) in 1971.

Kitty was a teacher at St. Timothy’s Episcopal School and Hale High School until 1978 and worked for Texas Gulf, Frameworks, Triangle Trigger-Point Therapy, and Arts Together in the years that followed. Her proudest work accomplishment was helping two of her children start and run the family business Humdinger Juice from 2013-2020.

When it came to her children, Kitty always had a front row seat, from filling in as head coach and team manager for soccer, making amazing birthday cakes for family and friends, traveling for basketball, show choir, and “on location” tv and film shoots near and far. In her free time, she enjoyed volunteering with the North Carolina Theatre and Hospice of Wake County (now Transitions LifeCare), and taking trips to St. Maarten with family and friends.

Kitty was preceded in death by her husband, William Tindel Fickes. She is survived by her son, William Crawford Fickes of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Her son Colin Fickes and husband, Daniel Nuñez Daly of New York City. Her daughter Mary Holt Collins and husband, Robert Collins of Raleigh. Granddaughter Camdyn Grace Fickes of Roxboro, North Carolina, and grandchildren Holt Merritt and Hobbs Tindel Collins of Raleigh.

From dance recitals and soccer trips with her granddaughter Camdyn to playing Putt-Putt with her grandchildren Holt and Hobbs at Sunset Beach, Kitty loved her family without a doubt. She believed that family was, and always will be, everything.

A visitation will be Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 4pm to 6pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. A private burial will be held the following day at Oakwood Cemetery.
