Lindy Wang Huang died after a short and intense 4-month battle with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. Lindy immigrated to the United States in 1964 from Taiwan, stepping off the plane in Raleigh, NC, a city she called home for the rest of her life. She was a staunch believer that America was the land of dreams and became a successful businesswoman and the matriarch of her family of 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
Growing up in Taiwan, Lindy's mother ran a factory that manufactured Christmas lights. She taught Lindy the basics of hard work, a mindset she carried with her when she immigrated to the US at 21. Lindy went on to obtain a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from NC State, using her drive to become one of the first female engineers in her department at IBM. She went on to work at IBM for the next 20 years as an operations research engineer, however, when asked her profession, she would often declare "I'm a mathematician!" owing to her everlasting appreciation for the logic and harmony of numbers.
After retiring from IBM, Lindy shifted her passion to real estate investment. She dreamed big and was headstrong, never to be dissuaded by others and living by the phrase, "nothing is impossible!" She imparted this mindset on her employees and all who worked with her, blunt and to the point at all times; a personality trait many came to love her for. She had a heart of gold and if she believed in you, she was always there to generously and unwaveringly support you.
Lindy was a fashionista, wanting designer clothes but NEVER at full price (ever the dealmaker). She swore by the 70% discount racks at Hudson Belk and relished in wearing large broaches. Never to be seen without makeup, she always wanted to ensure she looked glamorous, stylish, and successful. In her free time, she loved singing opera, having sung on Taiwanese radio as a child. Anytime an opera recording was within earshot, Lindy could be heard singing along, loud and proud. She also loved taking selfies, always wanting to document the places she would go and the people she would visit.
Lindy spent her final days surrounded by her family: siblings, children, grandchildren, close friends and associates. On July 6th, 2 days after celebrating Independence Day for the country she loved (waving mini American flags and posing for selfies), she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Cancer Research Institute to aid in research for immunotherapy (http://www.theanswertocancer.org/donate-to-cancer-immunotherapy). Lindy wanted to "get the Jimmy Carter treatment and see the tumors disappear!" as she put it. However, the rapid pace of her cancer prevented her from seeing that through. While cancer may have shaped Lindy's final days, it did not define the grit of her spirit, nor the depth of her soul.
Rest in Power, Ma. Forever strong. Forever beautiful.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 13th at 10am at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 11am in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park, adjacent to the funeral home.
She is survived by her children Lucas, Rosa, Ulric, their spouses Johanna, Kim Thomas and Holly and four grandchildren Amilee, Anika, Tekla and Tycho (A1, A2, T1, T2).
